Common bricks are usually lower quality than standard facing bricks and made with no attempt at colour or appearance control. These are fit for purpose and meet the minimum technical requirements. They are suitable for application where they are not exposed to the weather, protected, covered or rendered. Please see the datasheet attached.
When purchasing multicoloured bricks, it is advisable to mix bricks from at least 3 packs to achieve a nice balance of colour and eliminate ‘colour banding’. Since clay bricks are a natural product, there may be a small variation in colour from one production run to the next especially with multicoloured bricks.

Engineering bricks are specified for their physical characteristics and not their appearance. They have high compressive strength and low water absorption and are classified only by these properties. Their use for facing work should be avoided. Where aesthetic performance is a major consideration, facing bricks should be used.
