White Bricks
White bricks are a low-maintenance product that offer durability and a charming, rustic appearance, reminiscent of Mediterranean architecture and modern farmhouses.
With their colouration, white bricks are hugely favoured by contractors and architects. They perfectly complement Scandinavian, minimalist, coastal, and modern-inspired styles.
The bricks get their colour during the manufacturing from the clay mix and firing conditions.
Key Features of White Bricks
There are several types of white bricks, each with a different manufacturing process and characteristics:
- Natural (through-body) white bricks– This brick is white all the way through as it is made from light clays and contains minerals like Kyanite.
- Painted or coated white bricks– White bricks are made by glazing, while coated white bricks are a product of whitewashing and limewashing. A factory-applied glossy glaze finish gives you more options for what the colour can look like, while the whitewashed lime slurry bricks offer a softer, weathered look.
Types aside, the bricks come in the standard 215mm x 102.5mm x 65mm, which is the standard in UK buildings, but you can get them in custom sizes and profiles. The non-painted bricks are easy to maintain using simple brushing or occasional hosing.
Benefits of White Brick
- Durability and Longevity– With correct installation and preparation, a white washed brick finish can endure up to 3 decades without needing a refresh of the surface.
- Cost-Effective– Whitewashing already white bricks can be a cheaper and more effective way to keep them looking fresh over time without messing with the original texture.
- Aesthetic Appeal– White bricks bring a fresh, airy vibe to any space, suitable for most architectural styles.
- Energy Efficiency– Light tones are famously good at reflecting away sunlight, keeping the interiors cooler in the hotter months.
- Eco-Friendliness– Bricks are naturally recyclable, long-lasting, and using whitewash avoids synthetic paints. Lime-washing, a related method, is breathable and non-toxic.
Due to the mineral composition of white bricks, they also provide an added layer against pests and moisture.
What Are White Bricks Used For?
White bricks are used in both residential and commercial applications. They offer a clean aesthetic that blends well with many styles.
Residential
White bricks are used in residential sites for:
- Exterior walls, including modern farmhouses, colonial, traditional, and Mediterranean homes. The colour also reflects heat, cooling the interior.
- Interior accent walls in living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms. They add a rustic or industrial-chic vibe to the space.
- Fireplaces- A white brick fireplace has a warmer, more inviting appearance, creating a focal point in the home.
- Kitchen backsplashes
- Landscaping outdoor borders, patios,, and gathering spots. The material is durable and resistant to weathering.
Commercial
In the commercial sector, they can be used to:
- Build exteriors (retail spaces, restaurants, and office buildings)
- Create dramatic interior features (such as in a trendy restaurant or loft spaces)
You can also use white brick slips to get the brick-effect wall (as cladding) without using it structurally.
